A Call for Prayer for this Nation-Day Ten

Today I was presented with the primary reason why we must make the right choice in selecting politicians in general, and presidents in particular. One of those primary reasons, goes by the name of Tyler. He is my six-year old nephew. I called Tyler just as his Dad was about to tuck him into bed. I made the usual small talk about how he was doing and what he did in school today. Tyler informed me that he is studying his math so that he can become a firefighter. I asked Tyler why he wanted to be a firefighter. He succintly responded: "It is fun. Firefighters put out fires and save lives." That's Tyler...six going on thirty five!

I don't think that Tyler is going to become a politician. He gets to the point too quickly. He is too honest and he has a noble purpose in life. Speaking of honesty, when I told Tyler that when I saw him again, that I wanted a rematch of that basketball game where he beat me by a score of twenty to ten, he responded that it would not be a good idea. When I tried to play the "sympathy for dear Auntie" card, by asking him if he was going to go easy on Auntie. He wasted no words. I heard "nope." Nah, he would never make a politician. He has not yet learned to string me along, promise me to go easy on me, and then pick my pocket! He is still at the stage where, although he is a perfect little gentleman, he does not feel that Auntie is entitled to special treatment in a competition. I support him in that. Even Aunties should emulate the sturdiness of the citizens of yore! I am going to show that kid who has game, but that is for another time.

A favorite mantra of many is about "doing it for the children." Here is a chance to put that into action. For the children, let us make sure  that we elect more moral, ethical, responsible, God-fearing rules- of-God following, and less self-serving pols.  I realize that I am asking much in today's political climate, so I am going to call on those prophets and Kings of old to help me make my case.

Proverbs 20:11

11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

When I selected this verse as I was doing my Bible reading this morning, I had no idea that Tyler would share such words of wisdom as he did in our conversation. Without even knowing this verse, he is already on the path.

Proverbs 20:7

7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

As I read this verse, the following thought occurred to me. Do those politicians who "lead" by misleading, stop and think about the negative impact their boorish and often deceptive behavior can have on their progeny? Probably not. Of course Junior is fed and pampered with a nanny and a house full of toys. Junior will soon find out that not even "monster" trucks are no protection for him when his schoolmates begin gossiping about the latest news of the day. The news is flashing across the television screen that Junior's dad was quite literally caught with his pants down.

Psalm 59:16-17

16 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

17 Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.

Let us continue to pray for wise leadership, God's protection in the face of tough economic, social and moral issues.  However, while we are crying out to God for "stuff," let us also stop a minute and praise Him!
