Today, Some (in our Military) Did Give All

Today was the day that I was going to exult on this blog, that the Marines Team in Project Valour-IT was in a commanding lead in the competition between the branches of service,  to raise funds to purchase laptops for disabled troops. A massacre that occurred at Fort Hood took my focus from joy to mourning.

Ironically, one of the bloggers for the project, had already paid homage with a vignette of Marine graphics and accomplishments, set to the tune of "Some Gave All," by Billy Ray Cyrus. I was going to piggyback on her blog to show the poignancy of the song and its relevance to Military service:

Fort Hood happened and provided devastating evidence of twelve troops who had "all" taken from them. I am now simultaneously retrieving information from all media sources. The television is on. The headsets are in the ears listening to the radio. The links are being pulled up on the Internet: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33678801/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

We are not accustomed to having our troops shot up on their base of operation. Yet in just this year, this attack will be the second one, the first of the year occurring at a recruiting center in Arkansas. I pray to God that these are indeed aberrations.

Inevitably will come the investigations, recriminations and soul-searching. However, at least for this day, I pray that as a nation, we will put aside the differences manifested in labels, such as "right," "left," Republican," "Democrat," the creeds, the religions, and mourn as Americans.

I have to come clean and and admit that I am silently weeping, especially after hearing a request  on the radio for "Mansions Of The Lord:"

This is still America, "land of the free," because of the brave (troops who protect us). We will endure and survive. Let us always bestow the proper respect to those troops.

May God bless this land and its people, and especially bless our troops. May He lay His healing hands on those who were wounded, bring comfort to the families of those killed, and all of the kids who have been made orphans on this day.

The moving tribute set to "Some Gave All" had me choked up, but "Mansions of The Lord" sent me over the edge into true tears.
I never gave much thought to just what we owe our veterans until my father, a WW2 Army veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star, passed away in 2003.
I began to think about what my life would have been like if my dad, and men and women like him, had not laid down their dreams and ambitions and gone to war.
Every scrap of liberty we still possess, and every molecule of the air of liberty we inhale, we owe to them.
Thank God for them, and for every man and woman who has worn a uniform of the United States military before and since.
