America, Don't Get Mad...Elect Better Politicians!

Decision Day is almost here. November 2, 2010, is the day when Americans get to figuratively clean out the Congress. That is going to be the day when Americans either prove that they can identify frauds and take care of them accordingly – at the ballot box. Or – prove to the fraudsters that the calculation of the fraudsters that, there is a “sucker born every minute,” is true – and they once again fooled a gullible public by being voted back into office.

Unfortunately, the gullible among us will vote for “their” man or woman, not because of stellar accomplishments or sterling character of that politician but because they accept that politicians lie, cheat and steal – it is all part of the “game.” They already know their “robber baron.” They don’t want to take a chance on a new person. Plus, their robber baron knows that they know where he or she buried the bodies, and will “take care” of those voters. That is how it operates in a mutually corrupt symbiotic relationship. Screw the rest of the country that could be negatively impacted by the actions of their not so shining knight. He is “ours,” and we don’t care what the facts are!

Many other Americans are mad. They have heard or seen firsthand the “accomplishments” of their representatives, and they want no more of the current representation. They are metaphorically getting brooms and dust pans to sweep out the – let’s just say the items that are swept up with a broom. They feel betrayed by what they perceive as the three Ps – perks, pork and privilege. They see their children and grandchildren paying for the rest of their lives for the extravagance of the politicians. I say “don’t get mad – get even – by voting in true statesmen and women! And – do not just get even. Get vigilant and from now on keep an eye on the activities of representatives at all levels. Too many of them are like high school kids who need chaperones. Let us provide them with chaperones – the taxpayers who pay their salaries.

There are many of us who are excited about the upcoming elections, because we hope and believe that many of the candidates will usher in change – back to the America that still vaguely resembles the republic that the Founding Fathers set up, and envisioned would endure. I am also excited because many of those “agents of change,” are Military Vets. They are still early in the political game where, when asked a straightforward question, they give an even more straightforward answer. These men who are running presumably are very acquainted with making do, economizing, finding workable solutions when confronted with a problem – especially in light of the fact that the bottom line with which they have had to deal, is the life or death of themselves or their fellow troops. They are accustomed to bare bones accommodations and even more bare bones meals. They have not yet been confronted with the “weighty” decision of choosing veal or fillet mignon, in political terms. My late mom used to say “never bring hamburger to a banquet.” I want to make an exception. I want these hamburger types in the banquet that the US Capitol has become. They will know how to grill the “banquet as usual” politicos who have lost touch with reality and with the common folks!

I have heard about and heard many of these candidates outline their platforms. I like what I hear about being faithful to the US Constitution, representing all of America, being fiscally responsible, etc.. As I read through their biographies, it stood out that, in addition to their achievements in the US Military, these are men of impressive scholastic and business achievements. It is so chic to look down on citizens who join the Military as yokels who have no other choice, with barely an education. That is a slur and cruelly untruth. The men and women who join the US Military make the rest of us look like slackers! They are equally at home in the halls of Ivy League institutions, as they are in barracks in the middle of nowhere.

We have been almost run over by the “hope and change” train, barely escaping with some of the country still intact. So, these newcomers, should also know that I am going to be very faithful in keeping an eye, both eyes if necessary, to make sure that they do not become ensnared by the banquet types, and lose their focus. Instead of being their Teleprompter, I will be their “Poli-prompter,” as in their political prompter to maintain their adherence to policies and promises. They will hear from me. Like my distant cousin Santa (he doesn’t know that I am claiming that we are related), I will be making a list and checking it twice – or more.

The Republican Party recently released its Pledge. The Democratic Party has been working on its own pledge for the past few years. This Citizen Ordinary has her own pledge that she would like to share with the representatives of all parties.

Dear Senator/Congressperson:

I am not in your district but I am an American citizen, with concern for all of my beloved country. I am appealing to you to not disappoint your fellow citizens, yours truly included.

I was an immigrant, now citizen, and as I tell my friends, I was not born an American, but I was born to be an American. I have been here for most of my adult life, coming here after graduating from college. I did not come here solely to make a buck. I would have been financially more secure in my island of birth.

I came here because I spent my formative years in the US Virgin Islands and knew more about the US than I did about Britain, then the mother country of my island of birth. I came here because I fell in love with the ideals of the founding of this unique and exceptional country. We have moved from men of dignity, grace, patriotism and courage to? I don’t even want to fill in the blanks. It is too painful.

I beg of you. Please place the country above your personal ambitions, party loyalty and affiliation. We are hungry and desperate for leaders/statesmen and women, not a despotic ruling class. I am not that naïve to believe that there won’t be circumstances where you have to toe the party line, in order to move forward, but do not abandon your principles.

We, your national constituents simply require:

▪ a return of fidelity to the US Constitution

▪ less government interference in our lives…try living with the laws you pass for us to live with

▪ secure borders worthy of a sovereign nation

▪ less spending on frivolous programs

▪ less taxation

▪ more accountability on the spending that is going on

▪ no more pork, called earmarks…leave the marking of pigs’ ears to real pig farmers

▪ no more gerrymandering by politicians – leave the gerrymandering to an independent body

▪ more honesty…be brutally honest, rather than blatantly lying to us

May you be guided by God Almighty in making the appropriate legislative decisions for this country.

Sincerely,

Ercille I. Christmas

PS, I hope that whichever aide reads this, will not consign it to the “circular file.” This sincere missive is being sent because I am wishing for your success.

I am very serious when I state that I will be keeping an eye on the class of 2010 and beyond. I know that enough of my fellow citizens share my stance , that we will have to follow the admonition of President Thomas Jefferson that “the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” We fell asleep before. We cannot afford that luxury again. Our “employees” will have to begin feeling like The Police Song, “I’ll Be Watching You,” metaphorically speaking of course. We will be watching and we will be grading. The ruling class will be under the merit system.

To quote President Obama:

“We are within five days of fundamentally transforming America.”

I have used his words, but my meaning of “transforming America,” is fundamentally different from his. I want to fundamentally transform America as far away as possible from his vision. I want the America – established by the Founding Fathers – back.
